Remembering
Ray Copenhaver |
|
On
May 30, the Central Committee lost one of its members, Ray
Copenhaver. Ray was a true gentleman whose wisdom and wit were
always present. He and his wife, Margaret, also a member of the
Central Committee, registered voters, marched in the Lumberjack
Days parade, and campaigned for President Obama.
Ray will be missed. We extend to
his family and friends our deepest sympathy and our thanks for
all he did. |
So much has been happening with the
Calaveras County Democratic Central Committee, it's hard to now
where to begin.
First of all, in 2009 alone, with
the help of the Revitalization Committee, CCDCC
has
added 12 new members. The Committee now has 16 members who not only
represent different geographical areas of the county but
various sectors of the community such as education, arts, labor,
faith-based, health, and more. The Central Committee now
has 16 members:
-
Johanna Atman
-
Janice Bassett
-
Margaret

-
Dob Dean
-
Melissa Eads
-

The growth in membership has necessitated moving monthly meetings to a venue that better
accommodates members, guests and speakers. CCDCC now meets at
CalWorks, 509 East St. Charles Street
(Hwy 49 & Mountain Ranch Road),
San Andreas the
second Thursday of each month at 6:30 pm.
With a more robust Central Committee, we have the
resources to focus on continuing to increase membership of the
Central Committee, as well as each of the clubs, organize voter
registration and get out the vote efforts, explore issues
important to Democrats, and find people in Calaveras County
willing to step up and be on boards, commissions or run for
public office.
It's never been a more exciting time to be a
Democrat in Calaveras County! If you have a little time or
a lot of time to help out, contact the Central Committee at
info@calaverasdemocrats.org or call (209) 559-2672.
Put your passions, skills and interests to work making a
difference in our communities.

CCDCC Supports Important Resolutions |
|
At its June 14 meeting, the
Calaveras County Democratic Central Committee (CCDCC) supported
two resolutions that have subsequently been submitted to the
California Democratic Party (CDP) and will be presented at the
CDP Executive Board meeting in July.
The first resolution,
2009 Proposed Resolution for Reform of
Forestry Clearcutting Policies
was inspired by the West Club's desire to take on the
issue of clearcutting. Addie Jacobson of
Ebbetts Pass
Forest Watch gave presentations at Calaveras Central Committee
and West Club meetings, as well as to the Rural Caucus at the
CDP State Convention. Addie prepared the resolution,
working with Tillman Sherman, CCDCC Chair, and Tom Aja, member
of the CDP Resolutions Committee. (Click here to
read the
resolution. You can also
see the slide show
that was presented to the Rural Caucus.)
The other resolution CCDCC supported
was Another Step to Healing our
Financial Crisis. This resolution was submitted
by Helena Straughter, a member of the Stanislaus Central
Committee and a real estate broker. She has seen first
hand
the devastating damage the foreclosure crisis is doing to
Californians. She came to Calaveras for support of this
resolution that, in part, is asking lenders and service
providers to process short-sales of property in a timely manner
or face penalties. (Click here to
read the
resolution.)
Additionally, a third resolution to
be presented at the CDP Executive Board meeting,
Resolution
in Support of National Wild and Scenic River Designation for the
Mokelumne River and Opposing Expansion of Pardee Reservoir,
was prepared by Katherine K. Evatt,
Foothill Conservancy, and co-sponsored by Tillman Sherman,
CCDCC Chair, Randy Bayne, Chair, Amador County Central Committee
(ACDCC), and Sally Trestrail, member ACDCC.
read the
resolution.)
If you would like to voice your
support of any or all of these resolutions, please send an email
to
info@calaverasdemocrats.org, and your message will be
delivered to the Resolutions Committee.

John Burton Supports Rural Counties |
|
Senator
John Burton (Retired), the new chair of the California
Democratic Party is working closely with Regional Directors
and Caucus Chairs to identify the needs of rural counties.
He is working on a program to have counties develop a "wish
list" that will help them successfully fulfill goals to turn
red counties blue and fill local elected offices with
Democrats.
As more details are made
available, the CCDCC will work with the East and West Clubs
to come up with Calaveras' desires.

Calaveras County Water District
Elections |
|
The
election of directors for the CCWD Board for Districts
two, three, and four will be held in August. This will
be a mail-in ballot only. Ballots will be mailed late
July.

Water is very important
issue in Calaveras County. Please carefully study the
positions of each candidate. What CCWD does over the
next few years with respect to protecting water rights,
developing a regional approach to solving problems that
face the county, replacing aging infrastructure, and
providing value to customers has long range affects on
the future of our communities.
Watch for candidate forums,
house parties, and other opportunities to meet and
support the
Democratic candidates:
|
District 2 |
Bob Dean
(Incumbent) (D)
Jorge A. Contreras (R) |
|
District 3 |
Don Stump (D)
Dan Emerson (R) |
|
District 4 |
Ed Rich
(Incumbent) (R)
Diane Gray (R)
Dennis Dooley (R) |
Janice Bassett, CCDCC
Member from Valley Springs, and Mark Bonar, West
Club Treasurer from Arnold, are coordinating voter
registration efforts throughout the county.
The program brings
together voters who are willing to talk with friends
and neighbors who may be registered as "Decline to
State" or another party, and talk about Democratic
values and issues. You will be provided information,
voter registration forms, and other materials to
help persuade them to change their registration to
Democrat.
The California
Democratic Party has instituted the Bounty Program
that will pay up to $4 per Democratic registration. The
money will go toward expanding the voter
registration program.
If you would be
interested in participating, please call (209)
559-2673 or email
info@calaverasdemocrats.org.
