Besides elected officials, Calaveras County has a large number of  Boards, Commissions, & Committees (30+) that are filled by volunteers. These 200+ neighbors make a huge quality-of-life difference in Calaveras.

If you’re interested in the activities of any committee, please attend some of their meetings and find out what they’re up to.  The committees need your feedback and you might decide and to take the next step and join.  Even if there’s not a current vacancy, there’s a large number of openings that will open up at the end of  year.  In 2018, there are 60+ positions that will need to be filled.

The County has several Cemetery Districts.  I hadn’t known what they are, but they’re actually fairly interesting.  We have some really old (for California) cemeteries.  If you’re a member of  one of these districts, you are making a commitment to protect and maintain the cemetery.  There’s often staff to help with the maintenance, but you need to go by and check to make sure that headstones are standing and any graffiti is dealt with.  And yes, you might consider organizing friends & family to help tidy it up with weed trimmers in the spring.  But it also means helping people find where their ancestors are buried.  A couple of the Districts actually have a web sites with information on whose buried there.  If you have kids, this could be a way to make a history more relevant to them.

This information came from the County’s web site.
