A response to congressman McClintock’s op-ed in the Enterprise Thursday, October 7, 2021.
The Honorable Tom McClintock,
Dear Sir.
I read with interest your opinion piece in the Calaveras Enterprise on Thursday, October 7, 2021.
I have a couple of points of contention to make in response to some of your comments.
“Trump Administration Republicans passed one of the biggest tax cuts in American history…”
That was corporate welfare. It was a giveaway of public wealth to rich and powerful people who didn’t need it.
“Brian Reidl tallied up the total cost of the Democrat’s new spending bills…”
WRONG! Those bills are not “spending bills,” they’re investments. The Biden administration is making long-overdue investments in American infrastructure.
“Government cannot put a dollar into the economy that it hasn’t first taken out of the same economy.”
WRONG! The government put all of that money into the economy in the first place, ALL of it. Unfortunately, too much of it was put into the economy in the form of corporate welfare, giveaways of public wealth like oil, coal. timber, water, and infrastructure to “private enterprise” so they can make money off We the People. We sold 10 billion barrels of Prudhoe Bay oil for 8.65¢ a barrel. That was a giveaway of about $1 trillion dollars of public wealth to no-tax and low-tax corporations and investors. We the People built the Bay Bridge and turned the toll collection over to private enterprise so they can make money off We the People.
Congressman McClintock, you have been in government for a long time. I’m surprised at how little respect you have for We the People and the institution you serve.
The Preamble to the United States Constitution is a brief introductory statement of the government’s fundamental purposes and guiding principles.
THE PREAMBLE:
We the People of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
Article 1 – Section 8 – Powers of Congress
Clause 1: The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts, and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States
The primary purpose of the United States Government is to promote and provide for the general welfare of We the People. Collecting taxes to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence is providing for the general welfare of We the People. That is what Congress is supposed to be doing. That’s what the Democrats are trying to do despite the Great Obstruction Party’s attempts to prevent it from happening,
“What makes the Democrats think that socialism will work here any better than anywhere else it’s been tried?”
Government is the means by which We the People combine our powers and resources to accomplish works and ends that otherwise couldn’t be or wouldn’t be done. I live in Calaveras County in Congressional District 4. Socialism is working fine here.
There are not now and never have been enough drivers in Calaveras County to build and maintain the road and highway system that we have. Calaveras roads and highways are provided by the United States Government and the State of California Government. That’s socialism.
There are not now and never have been enough people in Calaveras County to build the dams, reservoirs, and water infrastructure we have. The freshwater that we have is provided by the state and federal governments. That’s socialism.
There are not now and never have been enough people in Calaveras County to pay for the electrical power grid we have. The electrification of rural America was accomplished by We the People acting through the United States Government. That’s socialism.
There are not now and never have been enough telephones in Calaveras County to pay for the old two-wire phone system we have nor the new wireless system that we have. We the People of the United States of America by combining our powers and resources through government created all of that. That’s socialism.
Where would the trucking industry be without the Interstate Highway system that We the People built? Where would the soybean and grain farmers be without the Mississippi River lock system that We the People built? We the People made the original investment to build Amazon.com and all of the other companies that depend on the Internet for their businesses to function. That’s socialism.
We the People are the government. If the Biden administration wants to hire tax collectors to collect back taxes that are due us – Go Joe! Do it. I pay income taxes on my Social Security income. Why shouldn’t Golden Toilet Handles Trump pay his share?
Respectfully,
William W. Moore
