Is Congressman McClintock Representing Calaveras County?

What Tom McClintock’s Voting Record Means for Everyday People in Calaveras County

 A Look at His Record

In rural America — and here in Calaveras County — decisions made in Washington, D.C. have a direct impact on our lives. Policies around healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, and trade influence everything from the price of gas to the security of our local hospitals.

Given this, it’s concerning that Congressman Tom McClintock, who represents our district (CA-4), has been increasingly absent from public town hall meetings. Constituents have reported difficulty getting responses from his offices, and in some cases, his offices have been closed, with staffing shortages cited as the reason. At a time when rural communities face real and growing challenges, access to our elected officials is critical.

But beyond accessibility, it’s important to examine how McClintock has voted — especially since President Trump returned to office — and what those votes mean for Calaveras County residents.

McClintock’s Voting Record: 2022–2025

Agriculture and Trade:

Support for Tariffs: McClintock has largely supported Trump-era tariffs and trade policies. While intended to protect American industries, these tariffs have often backfired on rural economies like ours by increasing the cost of farm equipment, feed, and exports. Calaveras farmers and ranchers — already working with slim margins — are feeling these pressures in higher input costs and lower market access.

Farm Bill: He voted against the most recent Farm Bill package, which included critical supports for small farmers, nutrition programs, and wildfire mitigation grants. In a wildfire-prone, agriculture-rich county like Calaveras, this opposition risks withholding important aid. The most recent significant vote related to the Farm Bill occurred on December 19, 2024, when the House of Representatives considered the American Relief Act of 2025. This legislation aimed to extend the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 (commonly known as the 2018 Farm Bill) for an additional year, through September 30, 2025.

The extension was necessary because Congress had not yet passed a new comprehensive farm bill to replace the 2018 version, which had already been extended once before.  As a result of the failed vote, the 2018 Farm Bill remains in effect under temporary extensions, creating uncertainty for farmers and rural communities, including those in Calaveras County. The lack of a new, comprehensive farm bill means that key programs related to agriculture, nutrition, and rural development are operating without long-term authorization, which can impact funding and planning for local agricultural producers and residents.

Healthcare:

Attempts to Repeal the ACA: McClintock has continued to support efforts to weaken or repeal the Affordable Care Act without a replacement. Rural communities rely heavily on ACA provisions, including protections for pre-existing conditions and Medicaid expansion. In Calaveras, where access to specialized healthcare is already limited, cuts could hit families hard.

Infrastructure:

Against Infrastructure Investments: He voted “no” on the bipartisan infrastructure bill, which would have invested billions in rural broadband, road repair, and wildfire prevention. For Calaveras County, which struggles with reliable internet and aging roads, this vote represents a missed opportunity to bring critical improvements to our community.

Veterans’ Services:

Mixed Record: While McClintock supported certain measures expanding benefits for veterans, he opposed broader packages aimed at increasing funding for rural VA clinics. Calaveras County is home to many veterans who rely on accessible services, and funding cuts can mean longer travel times and delayed care.
